According to VCCOOL: Thirty eight percent (38%) of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in California are associated with transportation, so any reasonable plan to address human induced GHGs must look at the way we design our cities and transport ourselves within our community. Bicycles can be part of the solution to our transportation woes. Plus [...]

INCARNATE MUSE Press is seeking poems for its second atheist poetry anthology. Confront, question,
or deny the god of your youth, the sacred text of your culture. Express your disbelief, disapproval,
doubt, or dismay. Looking for honest, thought-provoking poetry daring to speak against the social norm of
belief and/or attempting to take the stigma from non-belief. Interested in nontheism expressed positively
rather than solely in opposition to theism. Avoid gratuitous vulgarity and unfocused anger.
We feel that atheism is often defined too narrowly and inaccurately.
Deadline: July 30. Up to 6 poems
INCARNATE MUSE Press is also seeking poems from adult survivors of childhood emotional and/or psychological
abuse. We are looking for poems of high literary quality rather than poems that are simply cathartic.
We are not wanting to see poems about physical or sexual abuse, but about the other abuse, the one that can
be much harder to recognize. Parental bullying, neglect, disinterest, mental illness, personality disorders,
etc., interest us. Possible topics: loneliness, self-blame, confusion, deep feelings of worthlessness, anger,
recognition, acceptance, healing, forgiveness, distance, the impact on your adult relationships, etc.
Deadline June 15. Up to 6 poems, SASE. Incarnate Muse, c/o Michelle Rhea, P.O. Box 5756, Santa Barbara, CA 93150

JOHN KRIST & BRAD MONSMA
John Krist is a senior editor and Opinion-page columnist at the Ventura County Star, where he has worked since 1983. His weekly commentaries on land-use policy, natural resources and environmental issues, distributed by Scripps Howard News Service, are published throughout the US. The winner of numerous writing awards and journalism fellowships, he is the author of three books about California’s parks and wilderness areas, and has contributed to books on urban renewal and wildfire policy. His most recently published book is Voyage of Rediscovery, based on his experiences retracing the Lewis and Clark trail. His book about Ventura County’s agricultural industry will be out in November.
John Muir once wrote that if you tug on one thing, you find it hitched to everything in the universe. Brad Monsma, CSUCI professor and author of The Sespe Wild: Southern California’s Last Free River (University of Nevada Press 2004), adopts this ecological point of view in his teaching, writing, and life, following pathways from studying tricksters in oral and written literatures to immersing himself in nature writing and environmental history. He has published articles on multicultural literary theory, cross-cultural reading, religious identity, rock art, and the history of bears in Southern California. Monsma can often be found on foot, surfboard, kayak, or mountain bike seeking contact with the wild and with non-human critters.
