Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.

What will you do for Earth Day 2014?
On Friday, February 21, 2014 I had the opportunity to pose that question to 50 or so faculty who attended a flex day “unconference” at the BEACH aka the computer lab at Ventura College.
I’m very excited to say that every single Ventura College faculty member I talked with committed to participating in Ventura College’s Earth Day April 22! Faculty came up with great ideas on how their students can share their disciplinary knowledge and apply it to environmental justice and social justice problem solving. They also committed to encouraging their students to attend and to providing incentives including extra credit.
Following the faculty’s enthusiastic support and the end of a week of SITE faculty in-service training, I headed over to Facebook to start gathering community support for the Ventura College Earth Day 2014 event on April 22 and for a Ventura College Earth Day page. At this point, just 48 hours in, we have over 100 “likes,” over 50 people hoping to attend and over 1500 people invited to attend.

In just a few days through Facebook, we have had people volunteer to perform music and dance, to give talks on several different topics, and we have various community organizations offering to table and give talks on a number of subjects.
One very exciting development is Sheila Piala’s offer to produce inspiring graphic images from her photographs which she is pairing with encouraging quotes like the one above. We will be posting 1 or more of these each day and sharing them on Twitter and Facebook as well as here on this blog. Please share them! And if you have a favorite quote, please post it and we’ll try to make something with it.
If you’re not on Facebook (or even if you are!) please share your favorite environmental quote below!
And–Please subscribe so you don’t miss out! Thanks!!
PS And so what ARE YOU going to do for Earth Day? What can you share or teach? Here are some ideas!
