Kid Poets Post Poems on Mass Transit

July 14, 2009

Here’s a bright idea: provide school age poets a place to publish and fill the world of mass transit with words. According to this artcile, in Charlottesville, “Transit Service customers may get more than just a ride the next time they hop on the bus. Half of the CTS fleet will features dozens of original poems written by Charlottesville City School students.”| Here are a few more excerpts from the article:

Delu Stricker, a 6th grade participant says, “I got to use my imagination to create a bunch of ideas for rhyming, and I knew at the end it would be really fun to read it in front of all my friends.”

“The project is really important for our kids to be authentic writers and have authenticity in their writing. We thought it was a great opportunity for students to participate and have their writing shown for the city people,” said Charlottesville Literacy Coordinator, Karen Koory.

Although the poems will only be on display this summer, school leaders and students hope this project will continue for years to come. “I would love for it to continue in the future. I think that anytime we give our kids a reason to write and an opportunity to write for public display, it’s a great opportunity for them,” said Koory.
